Reflection:
The work I have done in this class has consisted of writing feature stories which required multiple skills. I wrote questions and conducted multiple interviews to center feature stories around. The story that is displayed on this page also took some research and background knowledge. Journalistic writing is something that I did not have much experience in before this class and it took a lot of creativity and open-mindedness in order to fully find the skills I had to write in this way. I feel as though I have had a lot of growth in my writing this year, a lot of it from this class. Besides the skills I learned, I also found out a lot about the important role of journalism in our democratic society. My feature story I wrote with Naima is a testament to this. Taking this class during a time where our democracy is going through many changes and witnessing the true importance of journalism has added a lot of depth to my experience. Being immersed into the social media aspect of journalism so heavily, as a teenager, has also added a different layer of understanding to what I know about journalism.
Although I may not be returning to the Quill newspaper next year I will have forever grown in my writing and interviewing skills. The main growth from this class has been how I have learned to consume news in an effective way. I have learned how difficult and important it is to discern for yourself the accuracy and relevance of the information that you take in. If we can understand the human element of news and journalism then we can have more compassion when we are reading and watching news. It is crucial for us to continue questioning the status quo and stay alert and in the present moment so that we can make good decisions in retaining information. This is a skill and value I hope to continue working on.
